Post How did you do the terrain?
Hey, I'm a fellow programmer using Irrlicht working on a school project similar to yours.

Anyways, I've sort of got myself into a jam. I really want a decent terrain so that 1) my program will have some meaning to random people that see it and 2) so I don't kill myself looking at a horrible sight for long periods of time.

I'm using height-maps and texture-maps. But they're a pain, especially with scaling. Texture-map: http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=texturemapte2.jpg. This what it ends up looking with the camera far out: http://img116.imageshack.us/my.php?image=temp1ix7.jpg.

I was wondering what you did for your terrain, because it looks nice to me despite it being programmer art. http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8864/outdoor7rm4.jpg

doesn't seem to bad, what were you problems with it?

were you using detail maps as well as the texture-map?
maybe lower the LOD on the terrain, so its more detailed from a distance?
also I added support for 64bit terrains in the svn, if you want higher res height-maps, as well as VBOs to speed things up.
